Patpong in Bangkok is the original red light district which started back in the 60's during the Vietnam War. Back then it was mostly visited by US soldiers who were taking a break from the war.
Today the streets of Patpong are filled with sandal wearing backpackers and tourists mingling with single males searching for sex for sale.
The red light district of Patpong is located in two streets, Patpong 1 and Patpong 2 which run parallel to each other.
Both of these streets are filled to the brim with go go bars and live sex shows, but Patpong 1 is easily the busiest and most crowded because of the Night Market that runs right in the streets of Patpong 1.
Though the Night Market is just a distraction it is the famous go go bars of Patpong 1 that attract men from all over the world. Go go bars with such names as King's Castle and Queen's Castle are extremely popular and have been in business way back.
Make no mistake, as commercialized as Patpong may be, prostitution remains the sole enterprise and attracts men from all over the world.
So it's not uncommon that men bring bar girls back to their hotels for an overnight stay. But what most men don't realize is that if they don't book a guest friendly hotel, then they'll inevitably get charged a 500THB joiner fee for taking a companion back to the hotel. Sometimes the fee is higher, depending on the hotel's policy.
So what do you do to avoid paying a joiner fee?
Look for a hotel that is guest friendly. There are only a handful in Patpong but you can find more in the Sukhumvit area. But my advice is to book early and make sure you keep second hotel choices in mind because guest friendly hotels in Bangkok are very popular.
